Thousands of buy-to-let families facetax shock"

Buy to Let Mortgages are mortgages specifically designed forpeople who want to invest in the property market bypurchasing one or more houses and letting them out totenants. The Owner is then able to benefit from anyappreciation in the capital value of the house itself. They arealso likely to be able to maintain the property and meet much ofthe loan repayment from the revenue realised by letting. The buy tolet phenomenon has driven house prices higher over the last fewyears while making a broader section of rental accommodationavailable.

Some people BUY houses and LET them to tenants.  That isbuy-to -let.

"...It is understood that many of the 80,000 taxpayers who haveunderdeclared have incorrectly claimed deductions for mortgagerepayments......

Measures introduced include a daily penalty of £60 a day for those who persistently fail to file their self-assessment returns on time, the removal of the cap on penalties it could charge to the value of the unpaid bill and bonuses for inspectors who chase debts. "
